Awe Is Not a Reward — It's a Reset

There is a study that found people who experienced awe — standing at the edge of a canyon, watching a storm roll in, hearing a piece of music that made the room stop — scored significantly lower on anxiety and significantly higher on reported life meaning the following day. Not the day of. The following day.

Which means the feeling that seems like a distraction from your life is actually protecting it.

The Steward finger of the Handprint is about guarding attention and energy. Most people interpret that as restriction — say no more, calendar harder, protect the work time. And that is part of it. But the other part is less obvious: if you never expose yourself to something larger than your problems, your problems become the largest thing in your field of view. They expand to fill the space available.

Awe is not a luxury for when the to-do list is done. It is the corrective lens. It does not make the problems smaller by solving them. It makes them smaller by reminding you of their actual scale.

The tidal creek that switches direction at high water. The first light on a mountain you have never seen before. The moment in a concert when the room goes completely still. These are not accidents. They are data — the kind that recalibrates your instruments before you get back to work.

A Bodhi Moment, at its core, is an awe event. Something leaves its mark on you. The practice is showing up somewhere it can.
